VAV Diffuser Retrofitting

Union Square (Downtown, New York City)

Union Square is a historical and cultural epicenter of New York City. In 2022, we began a continuous effort of VAV diffuser retrofitting in this late 1800s building with new Acutherm diffusers. The project was completed in phases to minimize patient disruption and optimize thermal comfort and energy savings.

Mount Sinai is a bright and expansive space, where you will find more than 30 specialties plus primary care, pediatrics, and a brand new seven-day-a-week Urgent Care Center.

Project Highlights

  • Accuspec provides Acutherm Thermal VAV Diffusers and Pressure Control Dampers (PIMs) through the patient and office areas.
  • There are a mix of Acutherm TF-HC VAV (heating and cooling) diffusers along with TF-D (manual adjust) diffusers based on application and space requirements.
  • Existing duct work dampers were modified with PIM modules to convert them to active pressure control devices.
  • Thermally powered VAV diffusers give each diffuser the ability to be an independent temperature control device proving local thermal comfort for each space they serve. This avoids the thermostat tug-of-war game between occupants as each diffuser provides independent temperature control set points in summer and winter for optimal comfort.
  • Acutherm was chosen for “Basis of Design” by Lilker Engineers.
