Multiple Projects

New York, NY and CT

Over the past 20 years, we have installed Munters Dehumidifiers in six New York City area bridges: Whitestone Bridge, RFK Bridge, Throggs Neck Bridge, Manhattan Bridge and The George Washington Bridge, and most recently, the Verrazzano Narrows Bridge. All of these bridges need constant maintenance and humidity control to keep them structurally sound.

The Verrazzano Narrows Bridge connects Staten Island NY to Brooklyn NY, and carries over 200,000 vehicles on average each day. At the time of its construction (1964), it was the largest suspension bridge in the world and held that title until 1981.

The two large anchorages built on each side of the narrows have north and south chambers. These chambers are where the main suspension cables connect to the foundation of the bridge and are the structural support for the entire 60,000-ton roadway. Each suspension cable consists of 26,108 wires, which are connected to the foundation in each of the chambers. Controlling the humidity in these chambers is critical to the structural integrity of the bridge.

When the Triborough Bridge and Tunnel Authority (TBTA) undertook the project of rehabilitating the anchorage chambers, we were called upon to ensure that proper humidity levels were maintained. We installed Munters Industrial Desiccant Dehumidifiers in each chamber to prevent condensation and corrosion. Similar installations were performed on the other bridges mentioned above.
